Even if a newborn looks healthy, it’s still important to check for hidden health problems. That’s why newborn screening is so important. It screens for serious medical conditions that may not be visible at birth. If a problem is discovered, early treatment can give a baby a better chance of living a long and healthy life. In South Carolina, the Department of Public Health now screens newborns for over 58 conditions.
